Copyright is a type of legal protection

The topic of copyright was discussed at a successful NISER seminar last week by IP Australia’s Queensland Manager Paul Loeffler-White. This subject is seldom understood and Paul explained the theory and the consequences to an avid audience.

Copyright is a type of legal protection for people who express ideas and information in certain forms and protects the original expression of these ideas, not the ideas themselves.

It protects the form or way an idea or information is expressed.

It is free and automatically safeguards the most common forms of original works such as art, literature, music, films, sound recordings, broadcasts and computer programs from copying and other specific uses.

There is no system for registration for copyright in Australia. You don’t need to publish your work to put a copyright notice on it, or do anything else to be covered by copyright – the protection is free and automatic. There are no forms to fill in or fees to be paid.
