Noosa Biosphere Reserve
The former Noosa Shire was awarded Biosphere status on September 20, 2007. In awarding this status, the Bureau of the Man and the Biosphere (MAB) International Coordinating Council of UNESCO noted the strong sense of community involvement and coordination over a broad range of human settlement and natural environmental issues. As a result, the former Noosa Council made recommendations to the Sunshine Coast Regional Council for a Noosa Biosphere Governance Board to manage the participation of a range of public authorities, local communities and private interests. Anne Lawrence’s country roots keep her grounded

From the soles of her Blundstones to the heights of UNESCO Biosphere status, Anne Lawrence knows first-hand the urgent need to protect, value and care for the land we call home.
Mrs Lawrence has been appointed as director of the Noosa Biosphere governance board, a role she juggles with a marketing position with the CSIRO in Cooroy, running the Noosa Boardroom with her husband Steve, staying actively involved with a group of business minds called Knowledge Exporters and Entrepreneurs of Noosa (KEEN) and raising two children. Productive Biosphere Workshop
Biosphere: a word whispered in the halls of the former Noosa Council more than three years ago has now become a word synonymous with the former Noosa Shire and protecting its future.
Finally, evidence of how UNESCO, Man and the Biosphere recognition will benefit Noosa in tangible ways could be seen last week when 60 members who make up the Noosa Biospheresector boards met for the first time in a facilitated workshop, to thrash out a process of operation, vision and Plan of Management for the Noosa Biosphere. The Biosphere proposal as presented to UNESCO identified NISER (Noosa Institute for Socio-Economic and Environmental Research) as an organization that was well suited to contribute to the ongoing development of the Noosa Biosphere in accordance with the principles and values as laid out by the governing body.
NISER Chairman Lew Brennan and myself as Deputy Chairman recognized these parallels and the enormous opportunities the Noosa Biosphere could bring to this part of South East Queensland and informed the then Noosa Council to NISER’s relevance in the development of the all important socio-economic component of the status.
